Persuasion est le dernier roman achevé de Jane Austen, publié à titre posthume en 1818.

Anne Elliot est une beauté fanée et effacée de vingt-sept ans. Elle est la fille d'un baronnet veuf et prétentieux. Ayant trop dépensé, ce dernier doit louer sa propriété de Kellynch, et aller vivre à Bath. Le domaine est donc loué à l'amiral Croft et à sa femme. Pendant que Mr. Elliot et sa fille aînée Elizabeth partent pour Bath, Anne s'installe un temps chez sa sœur Mary, non loin de Kellynch.

C'est alors que réapparaît le Capitaine Wentworth, le frère de Mrs. Croft. Il fut fiancé à Anne des années auparavant. Lady Russell, la protectrice et amie intime d'Anne, lui avait déconseillé cette union, car elle estimait que le jeune homme, officier de marine pauvre mais ambitieux, n'était pas de même rang qu'elle. Elle l'avait ainsi persuadée de rompre ses fiançailles.

Mais désormais les choses ont changé, Frederick Wentworth est riche, et il cherche à se marier ... Son attention semble se porter vers les demoiselles Musgrove, les belles-sœurs de Mary, tandis qu'il semble ignorer Anne...

Certes, il lui reproche de manquer de caractère, en se laissant jadis persuader par Lady Russell de renoncer à lui, alors que Louise Musgrove montre intrépidité et fermeté dans ses décisions. Mais a-t-il vraiment oubliée Anne ?

Jane Austen is my favorite writer and, of course, she is considered one of the greatest writer of all times. She can be read as a romantic writer, but she is a fine observer of people and society of her time. I've already read this book in English and I chose to read it in French because I'm learning the language. I don't regret it, because Jane is wonderful in any language. I'm sure I will read it again, because I think that Persuasion is her best book.
